Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide derived from the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) sequence. Origin and structure
Semax has the sequence Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro. It corresponds to a fragment of ACTH(4-10) with a proline-glycine-proline extension at the C-terminus.
The sequence is short, water-soluble and stable, which makes it straightforward to handle at the bench compared with larger neuropeptides.
Research directions
The most cited lines of work examine brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression, neurotrophic signalling, and dopaminergic and serotonergic system interaction in animal models.
