What Is Epithalon? Telomerase Research Peptide Guide
Epithalon, also written Epitalon, is a synthetic tetrapeptide with the sequence Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly (AEDG). It was developed from research on pineal gland extracts and is one of the shortest peptides in common research use.
Origin and structure
Epithalon was derived from Epithalamin, a pineal gland peptide preparation studied extensively in Russian gerontology research from the 1980s onward. The synthetic tetrapeptide reproduces the active sequence.
At four amino acids it is very small, highly water-soluble, and straightforward to handle at the bench.
Research directions
The most cited line of work examines telomerase activity in human somatic cell cultures and the associated effects on telomere length in those models.
Other published research covers melatonin rhythm and pineal function in animal models, and antioxidant and gene-expression markers.
The longevity framing that surrounds Epithalon in popular sources significantly overstates the published evidence, which remains largely cell-model and animal work.
